High School Activity #1
Partner with the classroom teacher. Go into the classroom and co-teach contraception. Share what resources are available at the Center and in the community.
The following health education benchmarks are required in a high school health education classroom around contraception and sexual health (Oregon Department of Education):
- Describe physical, social and emotional changes during the transition from
- Explain the menstrual cycle and its relationship to conception and pregnancy.
- Explain how conception occurs, the stages of pregnancy, and responsibility of parenting
- Demonstrate the ability to access community resources that provide assistance around sexual health and pregnancy (Perfect connection to SBHC’s!)
- Explain why abstinence is the safest, most effective method of protection from HPV, STD/HIV, Hepatitis B and C and pregnancy
- Effectively communicate the decisions and behaviors of family, peers and others that promote healthy sexual behaviors
- Use the decision making process to make healthy choices around sexual health
- Describe contraceptive methods, disease reduction measures, proper use, and their effectiveness
- Compare the effectiveness for a variety of contraceptives, including abstinence and disease reduction measures
- Develop short and long-term goals that will maintain sexual health and avoid unintended pregnancy and STDs.
- Identify possible short and long-term consequences of sexual activity, including increased risk with multiple partners.
- Describe the relationship between peer pressure, media influences and sexual decision-making
- Advocate for using sexual protection if having sex
- Describe gender roles and sexual orientation within healthy sexuality
- Demonstrate effective communication skills within healthy dating relationships
High School Activity #2
Partner with your health teacher and have students develop brochures to help market the SBHC to the school community.
Partner with the health teacher and draft a formal assessment/prompt that can be scored using a scoring guide. See below a prompt. A prompt is a well-developed activity that assesses student learning and skills related to a particular Oregon Health Education Standard.
Prompt
- Select three services that your SBHC provides and accurately describe each on the brochure
- Describe the link between students accessing care and how it impacts their health
- Include location of SBHC (including which bus or roads to take from the main part of your town) and costs
- If contraception is not offered as a resource at your SBHC, offer two other resources in your community (name and location) in which sexually active students or adults may access contraception
- Brochures may be developed in any language
