Grades 6-8
Partner with the teacher to have students write persuasive speeches advocating for the use of the School-Based Health Center. Have students present at the School Board or to younger classes. See below a prompt. A prompt is a well-developed activity that assesses student learning and skills related to a particular Oregon Health Education Standard.
Help teacher score the assessment (the speech, a state requirement)
Prompt:
You are a student advocating to a parent or adult group encouraging more families to use the School-Based Health Center. The audience of your persuasive speech is either the School Board, PTA or parent night at school.
Make sure your speech lists three things the SBHC can provide for families/patients and three reasons the SBHC may benefit families.
Make sure to include how to find the SBHC in your community and when they are open.
Facilitator note: Please consider having students actually present these to your local School Board, or present at a PTA meeting or parent night.
Score the posters or brochures using the following performance checklist:
| Item | Yes? | No? |
| Does my persuasive speech target the correct adult audience? | ||
| Does my speech include three services that our SBHC provides? | ||
| Does my speech include three benefits to families? | ||
| Does my speech include how to find the SBHC in our school? | ||
| Does my speech include the days and times that the SBHC is open? | ||
| Is my speech persuasive and genuine? |
